The Bundesliga giants have reportedly found a replacement for head coach Marco Rose once he leaves this summer.

Xabi Alonso has reportedly agreed to replace Marco Rose as Borussia Monchengladbach manager for next season.

Rose will leave Gladbach in the summer to take charge of fellow German club Borussia Dortmund. Despite this announcement, the 44-year-old plans to remain in his current role at Borussia-Park until then.

RB Salzburg boss Jesse Marsch, Eintracht Frankfurt coach Adi Hutter, and Werder Bremen’s Florian Kohfeldt were all tipped to replace Rose for next season.

But the role has instead gone to Alonso, according to Bild. An agreement has been reached, meaning the 39-year-old Spaniard will assume his first role as a head coach in June.

The former Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich midfielder hung up his boots in 2017. After a brief spell coaching the Real Madrid U14 team, Alonso took charge of Real Sociedad’s B team in 2019. He has managed 23 wins, 12 draws, and 12 defeats in 47 games.

Moving from a Spanish third-tier club to a Champions League challenger in the Bundesliga will be a huge step up.

But Alonso knows the German top-flight, having won three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich between 2014 and 2017. The club’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge valued him greatly for his intelligence, fluency in German, and strategic ability.

Bild’s head of football has even uploaded a photo of Alonso seemingly in Germany to confirm the outlet’s report.
