Things are starting to become more clear at FC Barcelona, they can’t afford one of their star’s elevated wages by next season.

FC Barcelona is in utter shambles with the elevated wage of a specific star, they simply can’t afford it. We are obviously talking about Lionel Messi and the €50 million per season he gets after tax. People need to understand the difference between getting paid before and after-tax when they hear these terms.

Any football club has to pay its due tax for the wages of any player they hired for their squad. The estimate of this payment fluctuates depending on the country they currently play. In Spain, clubs have to pay roughly around 50% of the salary they initially agree with any player on his contract. In Leo Messi’s case, they agreed on a €100 per season wage that leaves €50 million for Messi and €50 million for the taxman.

But this deal was okay before the global pandemic started ravaging the entire world. Things are looking very different now for players and their current clubs. There are very few institutions that can pay Messi’s wage right now and Barcelona is not one of them.

Barcelona is in complete ruins.

We’ve been talking about this since Messi decided to send that fax where he asked for an exit. Leo is aware of the club’s current situation and he still attempted to leave for free, which is a gesture many supporters considered disloyal. Today, interim president Carles Tusquets lift the lid on the real situation at FC Barcelona. He even stated that the club should’ve sold Leo Messi if they wanted to maintain a similar economy over the next five years.

While talking to RAC1, Tusquets said the following: “From an economic standpoint, I would’ve sold Messi in the summer transfer market. You don’t only save his elevated wages but you also get paid for his transfer. But this is a decision that the technical staff needs to assess. La Liga demands a salary cap right now and this would’ve helped the club deal with them better.”
