After 40 minutes of play, the play was halted at St. James’ Park due to a medical emergency in the stands.
Sergio Reguilon has revealed his role in suspending the Premier League match between Tottenham and Newcastle United on Sunday evening.
A strange incident occurred in the East Stand of St. James’ Park as a supported collapsed shortly before half-time. The proceeding came to a pause and both sets of players returned to the dressing rooms as the said supporter received urgent treatment.
It was Reguilon who alerted referee Andre Marriner of the harrowing incident. The Spanish defender was over by the touchline and near the stand where the distressing scene unfolded.
“I saw the man lying down. I was very nervous. I went to the referee and said “look at this, we cannot play like this, we must stop the match”, Reguilon, who was applauded by the Newcastle fans for response, told Sky Sports News after Spurs’ 3-2 win.
“I look at the fans saying “stop, stop”. I look over and I say “He’s lying down, it’s no good… please stop the game.”
