Ace Football previews the Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Chelsea and offers betting tips, odds, line-ups, and team news.

The first of a two-legged tie between Real Madrid and Chelsea in the Champions League takes place on Tuesday night in Spain.

In what will be only their fourth clash in Europe, both clubs have a lot riding on this one. Avoiding defeat is a must, knowing how difficult a comeback could be given how impenetrable each side’s defenses can be.

Another cagey and low-goal affair, therefore, could be on offer as Real Madrid and Chelsea vie for a place in the final of the Champions League.

Real Madrid Form & Stats

The 13-time champions defeated Liverpool 3-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals to seal a record 14th semi-final appearance. They now welcome Chelsea to the Alfredo Di Stefano on Tuesday.

Another 0-0 draw last weekend with Real Betis, however, has left Los Blancos on the back burner. Despite having 17 shots, they struggled to create any decent opportunities with an xG of 0.99.

Real Madrid have now been held to three goalless stalemates in their last four games. The returns of Eden Hazard and Toni Kroos, therefore, are a welcome boost as Zinedine Zidane attempts to spice up his frontline.

The hosts will be desperate to bag a result before next week’s trip to Stamford Bridge. They’re fully aware of the first leg’s importance, having won nine of their last 10 first-leg knockout ties alone.

Key Team Stats
  • Drawn 0-0 in 3 of their last 4 games in all competitions (W1).
  • On a 17-match unbeaten run in all competitions (W12 D5).
  • Kept a clean sheet in each of their last 4 games in all competitions.
  • BTTS in 6 of their last 10 home games in all competitions.
  • Won the first leg in 9 of their last 10 Champions League knockout ties.
  • Zinedine Zidane has the joint-best Champions League knockout record for a manager alongside Luis Enrique (67%, P27 W18).

Chelsea Form & Stats

Timo Werner scored his 11th goal of the season on Saturday to seal a 1-0 derby win over West Ham. It was the perfect start for what promises to be a challenging week for Chelsea.

After progressing past Porto 2-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, the Blues will meet Real Madrid. It will be their eighth Champions League semi-final appearance, more than any other English club, and arguably their most difficult one yet.

Avoiding a first-leg defeat, or at least by a heavy margin, will be key for Thomas Tuchel. The German’s tendency to place a greater emphasis on defense has suited the club superbly. Chelsea are on a 10-match unbeaten run away from home under their manager. They’ve also pulled off some big results already by beating Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, and Manchester City.

One player who could be worth keeping an eye out for is Hakim Ziyech. The Moroccan has had a mixed start to his Blues career but he has an excellent record in the Champions League knockouts and played a critical role in Ajax’s surprise last-16 victory over Real Madrid in 2018/19.

Key Team Stats
  • Unbeaten in 20 of their last 22 games in all competitions (W15 D5).
  • Unbeaten in their 10 away games under Thomas Tuchel in all competitions (W8 D2).
  • Under 2.5 goals in 18 of their last 21 games in all competitions.
  • Under 1.5 goals in their last 4 games in all competitions.
  • Kept a clean sheet in each of their last 3 games in all competitions.
  • Edouard Mendy has conceded just 2 goals in his 9 Champions League games.
  • Thomas Tuchel hasn’t lost any of his 4 games against Real Madrid (W1 D3) in the past.
  • Hakim Ziyech has supplied 4 goals and 2 assists in 7 starts in the Champions League knockouts.
