Los Blancos drew first blood in the match at Ibrox Stadium but a resilient hosts fought their way back to victory.

Real Madrid started their 2021-22 pre-season campaign on a sour note as they suffered a disappointing defeat against Rangers in Glasgow.

Real Madrid fielded a weakened but still relatively strong starting XI, with a few experienced first-team players such as Marcelo, Lucas Vazquez, Nacho Fernandez, and Isco in the line-up.

The deadlock was broken inside the first ten minutes, with Rodrygo giving the visitors the lead after cutting inside from the left and poking the ball home.

The hosts upped their game before the break and eventually equalized ten minutes into the second half. They then took the lead when Cedric Itten produced a sumptuous right-footed finish with 13 minutes remaining on the clock.

It was a well-deserved 2-1 victory for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers as Real Madrid, who played with 10 men for the last 15 minutes or so, struggled to find form throughout the 90 minutes.

Los Blancos were without many of their star players including Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Eden Hazard, and Karim Benzema while new signing David Alaba was also nowhere to be seen.

Carlo Ancelotti will be hoping his side step up their performance when they take to the pitch in Austria on August 8 to face AC Milan for their second pre-season warm-up fixture.
