Marcus Rashford has outlined Manchester United’s ambition to bridge the gap on Liverpool in the upcoming Premier League season.

The new Premier League season is around the corner. Rashford, who helped Manchester United finish third last time out, is eager to see his side mount more pressure on Liverpool and Manchester City.

The Red Devils’ summer business got underway earlier this month. Donny van de Beek arrived at Old Trafford from Ajax for a fee of €39million.

The Dutchman’s signing represents a part of United’s plans to restore their place among the Premier League elite.

Having not lifted the league crown since Sir Alex Ferguson signed off in style in 2013, they are desperate to bring the glory days back to the red side of Manchester.

Last season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men fell 33 points short of title-winners Liverpool. A return of just 18 wins from 38 Premier League fixtures gave their supports a viable reason to be wary.

But, Rashford is keen to see Manchester United back in the running for the top-of-the-table finish in the new season.

“I think that’s natural for anyone who plays for the club or anyone who’s from Manchester,” Rashford said, as relayed by the Daily Mirror.

“We have to use all that as motivation to keep improving as a team.

“But we can’t lose sight of what’s important, and that’s our own team’s development and to keep improving. You can find yourself sometimes looking too much elsewhere.

“But we play our best, and we improve most when we concentrate on ourselves as individuals and as a team.

“The manager always wants us to do that and that’s the best way to do it.

“It’s obviously a big step,” the 22-year-old also reflected on United’s hopes of closing the gap on Liverpool.

“The lads worked hard and for me, it’s what we deserved as a team. We’ve had some tough times this season and some times where we’ve been unstoppable.

“But we need to find that consistency, that’s the biggest thing for us. We have quite a young team, so if we can find that consistency, that will be important for us.”
