Paris Saint-Germain were the hosts for their Champions League clash against RB Leipzig on Tuesday night. It was clear that the French team needed a win to get back on their feet after their loss in the previous fixture. Moreover, PSG suffered from a defeat from Monaco last week in Ligue 1. And with only one win in the European tournament, Thomas Tuchel required his men to boost their morale.
It was a good day for the French champions, as Neymar and Mbappe returned to the squad roster for this important match. And PSG did not disappoint this time and scored an early goal to set things right. Angel Di Maria was taken down by Marcel Sabitzer in the penalty box with a mistimed tackle. The Brazilian subsequently stepped up for the 50-50 challenge against Peter Gulacsi in the Leipzig goal. However, Neymar fired home the spot-kick, and the teams went to the dressing rooms with just one goal on the screen.
A tough fight from the German side, but Navas keeps the clean sheet.
The second half saw Leipzig trying to penetrate PSG’s defensive line. But the mighty Keylor Navas saved his side on many occasions. Although the visitors dominated the last bit of the play, they could not break through to find the equalizer. Marquinhos and Navas kept denying constant attempts from the likes of Emil Forsberg and Dani Olmo.
Mbappe was near to take a 2-0 lead, but a crunching tackle from Dayot Upamecano kept things level. The final minutes looked as if both the teams were recreating the semi-final from last season. But Leipzig could not breach the strong PSG side, who put their best efforts to defend deep in the second half. With Neymar’s solo goal of the match, the Parisians now hold the second spot on the table behind Manchester United.
