Where the football icon will be playing next season remains to be seen as he continues to delay Barca contract extension.
Gerard Pique claims to be unaware of fresh developments regarding Lionel Messi’s future at FC Barcelona but says the Argentine has “looked happier in recent months”.
Messi’s future at Barcelona has been uncertain ever since he dropped a bombshell of handing in a transfer request at the club last year.
While he made a U-turn on his initial decision out of fear of going into a legal war with his boyhood club, the six-time Ballon d’Or left the door open for a move away in the future.
The 33-year-old is approaching free agency but is yet to put pen to paper to fresh terms with the Catalan giants, who risk losing him for free in the summer.
“I couldn’t tell you what’s going to happen with him,” Pique told Movistar on Messi’s future.
“I think in recent months he looks happier. That’s important.
“He impacts the team because he is the captain and influences the whole team. The club is doing very well and much of it is because of him.
“Messi has been with us in the team for several years. We know him well, and we will support his decision.
“We should be grateful for what he has done.”
