After Manchester City’s Champions League victory, Pep Guardiola said a short but powerful phrase about Diego Maradona’s sudden passing.

Diego Maradona’s passing affected everybody in football but few had a phrase as powerful as Pep Guardiola’s earlier today. The Manchester City manager expressed a feeling that many football fans should acknowledge before passing judgment on the late football legend. In many ways, Diego Maradona has been heavily criticized for his accelerated lifestyle.

There are those who prefer talking about what he did outside the pitch rather than the wonders he accomplished inside of it. Younger generations who weren’t born in Argentina have no idea of the legacy that Diego Maradona leaves in football.

They will only follow the trend of paying homage without really knowing what he meant for the sport. In comparison, Ronaldinho might be the only player who did similar things with the ball at his feet. Both shared a unique connection for this reason, they were true magicians on the pitch.

Guardiola described Maradona’s legacy to perfection.

Those who understand what Diego means for football can speak about the legacy he left. Amongst all those who spoke today, we have Pep Guardiola’s perfect reaction that describes Maradona in a nutshell.

After winning today’s Champions League match against Olympiakos, Pep was obviously preparing something to say about Diego in public.

While talking to the press about his passing, Guardiola simply said via Sport: “The other day I saw a giant poster in Argentina that explains Diego to perfection: ‘What you did with your life doesn’t matter, all that matters is what you did with our lives’.”

Diego is part of that never-ending inner debate of separating the art from the artist. Maradona certainly made more than one think about this concept after watching him play inside a football pitch. People often forget any wrongdoing from an artist as soon as they enjoy his work in awe.
