The Magpies defied the odds to pull off a third-round upset against eight-time winners Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola congratulated Newcastle for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup victory.

In a surprising turn of events at the Carabao Cup, Newcastle secured a spot in the fourth round by winning 1-0 at St. James’ Park. They overcame a dominant first-half period from Manchester City to snatch the victory. Alexander Isak scored the decisive goal in the 53rd minute.

Nonetheless, Guardiola graciously congratulated Newcastle, acknowledging their resilience and strategic play.

Speaking after the match, Guardiola said: “First congratulations to Newcastle for going through. A big compliment to the players, I told them in the locker room, for the way that we played compared to last season against Southampton, we were there.”

Guardiola went on to commend his own team for their brilliant first-half performance but acknowledged the shift in momentum in the second half.

That said, the manager still praised his players for being present in challenging moments.

“I said to be there in the bad moments and we were there,” Guardiola noted. “At the end, we could not win, with the crowd. Congratulations to Newcastle.”

He added: “For the rest of the teams, good luck for the Carabao Cup.”

Despite their Carabao Cup exit, City can still match last season’s treble feat as they remain in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.

The Citizens will be back in action on Saturday away to Wolves in the Premier League.
