The Magpies edged out City to reach the Carabao Cup’s next round.

Newcastle defeated Manchester City 1-0 in their Carabao Cup match on Wednesday. Alexander Isak’s second-half goal kept the hosts in the competition.

Newcastle came into the game with eight changes to the lineup that crushed Sheffield United 5-0 on Sunday. The Magpies were completely dominated by the visitors in the first half but managed to survive their attacks. The Citizens made a few serious chances but failed to convert them before the break.

Eddie Howe then changed the course of the game by bringing in Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon at the start of the second period.

Following a brilliant run and assist from Joelinton, Isak made it 1-0 for the hosts in the 53rd minute. The goal forced City to push for the equalizer as Newcastle mostly stayed in their own half for the rest of the match.

City made a number of attempts to get back into the game but failed to convert their chances. Julian Alvarez missed two decent opportunities to score as Pep Guardiola’s side were eliminated from the EFL Cup.

City will continue their Premier League campaign with a match against Wolves on Saturday before taking on RB Leipzig in the Champions League four days later.
