After an eight-goal thriller against Chelsea, Pep Guardiola opened up on Manchester City’s progress in the Premier League this season.

Pep Guardiola has confessed that he didn’t expect Manchester City to lead the Premier League into the international break.

After losing 1-0 to Arsenal on October 8, City dropped to third place in the standings, trailing Tottenham and Arsenal by two points. It was at this point that Guardiola felt his side would face a daunting challenge to reclaim first. Yet, they responded in style, winning five of their next six matches.

This excellent run not only secured City’s spot in the last 16 of the Champions League, but moved the Citizens to the top of the Premier League. Sunday’s 4-4 draw at Chelsea moved them one point clear of Liverpool and Arsenal.

“Important that we go into the international break top of the league, I couldn’t expect it after the Arsenal game when we lost,” Guardiola said on Sky Sports.

“We’ve qualified for the Champions League [knockout stage] and we’re top of the league, where we come from, wow, that is really, really good.

“Now rest, hopefully they come back fit, the next games are really, really tough.”

City will return to action on November 25 at home to second-place Liverpool in the Premier League.
