During a recent press conference for the club, Pedri agreed on the endless comparisons with one of Barcelona’s biggest legends.
FC Barcelona’s Pedri does remind a lot of people of a player who became a Blaugrana legend at the club. His cadence to move on the pitch with the ball glued to his feet. The creativity and vision as he makes every decision when he performs. An uncanny connection with Leo Messi when you see them get together on the pitch. The similarities Pedri has with Andres Iniesta are all there. Ignoring them would be a grave mistake.
Even the young player accepts he was an avid Iniesta follower when he was a kid. But the experts consider that comparing him to one of the best midfielders in football history this early is a mistake. Pedri himself did agree that he had Andres as one of his biggest inspirations. We can get outraged by these comparisons but Pedri just keeps on getting better at his own game.
Pedri’s statements about the Iniesta comparisons.
In a press conference picked up by Mundo Deportivo, Pedri said: “I’ve always loved Iniesta and his style of play. He’s been my reference and I’ve always tried to imitate him. I believe I’ve seen all the Iniesta videos on Youtube. I’ve never missed a single game he played, so I guess there’s something in there. Since I was little, I’ve always had that calming sensation and I’ve played like this since I was a kid in Tegueste.
“Why would I change anything at Camp Nou? One day, Koeman took me aside and told me he didn’t know much about me. He said he just saw me play and I would have to show him what I can do in practice. I got motivation out of his words. Somehow I knew I had to work as hard as anybody in order to earn my place.”
