Thomas Partey’s father confirmed two top European clubs sought his son out before completing a deadline day transfer to Arsenal.

After months of prolonged speculation, Arsenal made their move to sign Partey in a €50m deal. He is set to become a key figure under Mikel Arteta once the international break ends this week.

The Gunners boss was keen to add the midfielder to his ranks despite Atletico Madrid wanting to keep him, and it appears he wasn’t the only one either.

It turns out reports linking Chelsea with a late move for Partey weren’t so far-fetched after all. The Ghanaian’s father, Jacob, has confirmed the Blues were interested along with Serie A champions Juventus.

“We actually weren’t disturbed by anything because we hoped a bigger team will come for Partey,” Jacob told My Joy Online.

“We were aware of the [other teams that were interested]: Juventus, Chelsea and so forth. So through all of this we knew God was with us. From that minute we started to dance to ‘Party after Party’.”

Joining Chelsea would’ve offered Partey the opportunity to continue playing in the Champions League, which has eluded Arsenal for the last four seasons.

“What I [noticed] was that he was willing to play where there is Champions League [football] but [I suggested to him that] can’t he be where there is no Champions League and help them get into the Champions League?” Jacob Partey continued.

“My advice to him was irrespective of the big move, he has to keep training seriously and not lose focus. Not chase ladies so he doesn’t flop! He was very receptive to that.”
