Overmars: 'The chance that Suarez will come is quite small'

Luis Suarez has been linked with a move away from Camp Nou and Ajax want him to return to his old hunting ground.

It was at Amsterdam Arena that Luis Suarez showcased his deathly proficiency in front of goal. Since then, he has entertained the Anfield faithful and become a darling at Camp Nou.

The current turmoil at Barcelona has reached him as well. While Lionel Messi has asked to be released, Suarez was told to pack his bags by Ronald Koeman.

Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with his signature, with Ajax also in the running.

Ajax’s Director of Football, Marc Overmars has quizzed about the Uruguayan’s return. The retired winger did not rule out the possibility, reflecting that they are in contact with him.

“Let me put it this way: the chance that he will come is quite small. That’s a straight answer, I think. Whether there has been any contact with him? We have that with several ex-Ajax players. That is logical, you also have to maintain that,” Overmars told Ziggo Sport.

While Suarez is being linked to Ajax, Donny van de Beek is being linked with a move to Barcelona. Overmars swiftly rejected the speculations, claiming he is in the dark about any such movement.

However, Overmars admitted that there are slim chances that he will return to Amsterdam.

“No idea, at least that hasn’t made it onto my plate yet.”

The current transfer window has seen little transfer activity at the Amsterdam Arena. Only Hakim Ziyech has departed for Chelsea, with the Eredivisie side holding on to their prized assets.

Overmars believes the inactivity is due to the circumstances and not the calendar dates. The retired Oranje winger pointed at the late finishing of European competitions to make his point.

“It’s pretty quiet. I certainly think the market has yet to get going. That makes sense: the Champions League has only just ended, so that will start soon. There is always interest for some players. A few players look good, one player has fairly serious interest. Who that is? That will show itself in the coming weeks.”
