Opinion: The reason Leo Messi should win the Ballon d’Or

We came to tell you the main reason Leo Messi should win the Ballon d’Or by the time the year 2021 comes to an end later this year.

Watching Leo Messi lift the Copa America with Argentina last weekend is amongst the biggest reasons he should win the Ballon d’Or this year. However, that is but the easiest reason to mention when we talk about the chances he has to win the trophy. This would be the seventh time he lifts the most coveted individual trophy football has to offer. Out of all the great players who performed at the highest level this season, Leo remains at the very top due to the amazing summer he had.

But there are other aspects of his performance that mustn’t go unnoticed. Out of all the players around the world, Leo is the one with the better numbers overall. In this opinion piece, we will talk about the main stats we need to highlight of Leo Messi’s 2021. Because he didn’t only get to win the Copa America for Argentina. Leo also dominated many aspects of the game like we hadn’t seen from him in an international major tournament before. Plus, he has been at the top of all the stats since the current calendar year started.

Messi’s numbers in 2021.

Let’s start with his overall stats with his club and his country. Out of 38 matches played overall, Leo already scored an impressive 33 goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions. He won La Liga’s ‘Pichichi’ trophy (his seventh) and the Spanish Copa del Rey. But his Copa America dominance is what sent him all the way to the top above players like Robert Lewandowski, N’Golo Kante, or Cristiano Ronaldo.

Leo became the first player in football history to win the MVP, top scorer, top assist provider, and the title in any international tournament. No other footballer has been able to do that in any Copa America, European Championship, or World Cup. For this alone, Messi deserves to be the main favorite for his seventh Ballon d’Or title. But none of that matters for Leo. All he cared about was winning something with his beloved Argentina. The rest is just an added bonus for his amazing year.
