A day after winning the Copa America, Lionel Messi got an update about his contract renewal from Joan Laporta himself on Monday.

Despite the many doubts surrounding Leo Messi’s contract renewal, Joan Laporta is still feeling confident the deal could happen soon. There have been many hurdles throughout the negotiations that are mostly related to the club’s salary cap. La Liga refuses to help Barcelona overlook the rules as they should with any other club. Laporta has been working hard in order to offload some of the players who aren’t in Ronald Koeman’s plans anymore.

These players are Phil Coutinho, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Samuel Umtiti, and a handful more who must leave the club. If the Catalan giants manage to get rid of these players, there’s a good chance Leo Messi can remain at the club next season. A few weeks back, there was fear in Joan Laporta’s face because things started getting a little complicated for them. However, today was a new day for fresh news in that regard. Laporta just offered what could be considered the most encouraging update on Messi’s future.

Laporta is happy for Messi’s Copa America triumph.

During a public event reported by Marca, Laporta offered the update on Messi’s future. He also congratulated him and ‘Kun’ Aguero for winning the Copa America with Argentina. Everybody wanted them to win this tournament in order to gain more confidence for the next couple of years at the club. This is what Laporta said: “[Messi’s renewal] is progressing adequately. All the Catalans, Barcelona, Catalonia and the entire football world are happy because Leo won the Copa America.

“It is very exciting to see the best player in football history get excited about winning a title like this and he made all of us cry with joy. He is very happy, we are all happy, I am happy for Leo who has managed [to win the Copa America], together with his teammates, and that Argentina are once again in the elite, and [I am] also [happy] for [Sergio] Aguero. I am happy for Messi’s family, for Argentina, for Barcelona who are recognized, admired and loved for having this bond with Leo.”
