Only nine more rounds are left but the race for the Spanish top-flight crown remains wide open, with the leaders only two points clear at the top.
Only Real Madrid are capable of snatching the La Liga lead from Atletico Madrid, according to former Los Blancos midfielder Michel.
Atletico had established a wide gap between them and the other La Liga title contenders and had looked favorites to clinch their first title since 2013-14 but those hopes are increasingly diminishing following amid their recent dip in form.
FC Barcelona have managed to reach within touching distance of them, just two points behind at second, while Real Madrid are also breathing down their necks, sitting at third with only a three-point deficit.
Barcelona, obviously, have better chances of taking the top spot from Atleti, but an ex-Madridista believes only his old team has what it takes to usurp the leaders.
Michel told Cadena SER: “The only team that can overtake the lead from Atleti is [Real] Madrid. I was surprised that Atleti got so tangled up.
“Madrid are strong and have more strength in depth than Barca. Madrid’s two starting center-backs [Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos] have been injured and the two who have played in their place [Nacho and Eder Militao] have been excellent.”
