Wolves have completed their capture of FC Barcelona right-back Nelson Semedo for a reported fee of €40m.

Nuno Espirito Santo has been in the market for a new right-back this summer following the departure of Matt Doherty, who left Wolves for Premier League rivals Tottenham.

The Wanderers boss has since set sights on fellow Portuguese Semedo, who confirmed his departure from Barcelona on Tuesday, and has now put pen-to-paper on a contract at Molineux until June 2023. A further two-year option is also included as part of the deal.

Wolves will pay Barcelona an initial €30m for the right-back, and a further €10m in add-ons.

“‘Progressive at heart’ is one of our core values at Wolves. For a member of staff, for a player, for the whole club, we are all making great efforts to progress continuously,” Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shi told the club’s website.

“It’s isn’t often that we have the opportunity to sign a world-class player from a world-class club. Nelson’s signing shows we will never stop progressing and we are still hungry and humble in our heart.”

The 26-year-old becomes Wolves’ fifth new signing of the summer transfer window after Fabio Silva, Fernando Marcal, Vitor Ferreira and Ki-Jana Hoever.

He will prove a valuable addition for Nuno’s side through his talent and experience, having featured prominently for Barcelona since his €35.7m arrival from Benfica in 2017.

Semedo made 124 appearances in all competitions for the Blaugrana, winning two La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey.

The Portugal international could make his Premier League debut as soon as Sunday’s fixture against West Ham for Wolves.
