PSG have successfully secured the services of the Dutch midfielder after gazumping the contract offer by Barcelona.

Georginio Wijnaldum has joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer from Liverpool, the Parisian club announced on Thursday.

Wijnaldum, who made 237 appearances for Liverpool during his five-year stint at the club winning the Champions League and Premier League, has committed to a three-year contract with PSG.

Initially, it was expected the 30-year-old would reunite with his former national team manager Ronald Koeman and join Barcelona. However, talks with Mauricio Pochettino and a much more lucrative contract than the one offered by Barca convinced him to change his decision and move to Paris.

The midfielder will be expected to add a new dimension in the middle of the park for PSG when paired alongside Marco Verratti, Idrissa Gueye, Leandro Paredes, or Ander Herrera.

“Joining Paris Saint-Germain is a new challenge for me,” Wijnaldum said.

“I’m joining one of the best squads in Europe and I want to bring all my desire and commitment to this ambitious project.

“Paris St-Germain have proved how good they are in recent years, and I am convinced that together we can go even further and higher.”
