Three new midfielders could be on FC Barcelona’s shortlist as potential alternatives to Georginio Wijnaldum.

A very lucrative last-minute approach from Paris Saint-Germain has convinced Georginio Wijnaldum to reject Barcelona.

The 30-year-old is now set to complete a free transfer from Liverpool to PSG in the summer, leaving Barcelona to search for alternative options to bolster their midfield for next season.

Now, as stated on Marca, the following three midfield targets could be on the club’s horizon on free transfers.

Hakan Calhanoglu

The Turkey international will become a free agent once his AC Milan contract ends in July. He will become a top target for several clubs, and it appears Barcelona are no exception. The debt-ridden Catalan club need a quality midfielder for as little money possible, something Hakan Calhanoglu ticks all the boxes in.

Fernandinho

Perhaps the most surprising player on this list is Fernandinho. The 36-year-old is still a top talent and played a key role in Manchester City’s title-winning run in the Premier League. In fact, Pep Guardiola’s decision to not start him in the club’s 1-0 Champions League final defeat to Chelsea was heavily criticized.

Fernandinho will be a free agent once his City contract expires this summer. But with another veteran midfielder Sergio Busquets already around, is he the right move for Barcelona?

Franco Vazquez

The third and final Wijnaldum alternative is Franco Vazquez. The Argentine’s contract with Sevilla ends this summer. Talks over an extension have made little progress, but he remains keen to stay in Europe.
