After being a backup for the majority of his senior career so far, the Spaniard finally joins a club where he could be a starter.

Real Madrid have announced Alvaro Odiriozola has joined Fiorentina on a loan deal that will run until the end of the 2021-2022 season.

Unlike most loans deals, the two clubs will not be sharing the player’s salary as Fiorentina has agreed to fully cover Odiozola’s reported €70,000-a-week wages, according to sources.

The 25-year-old was expected to compete with Dani Carvajal for the right-back spot upon his arrival at Santiago Bernabeu from Real Sociedad back on a €30 million move in 2018. Not only did he never really manage to challenge Caravajal, however, but he also ended up serving as a second fiddle to the makeshift right-back Lucas Vazquez.

Deprived of minutes on the pitch by the La Liga giants, the Spaniard has now moved to the Serie A in search of regular game time.

A statement on the official club website reads: “Real Madrid C. F. and ACF Fiorentina have agreed a loan deal for Álvaro Odriozola for this season, running until 30 June 2022.”

An official statement on the Serie A side’s website reads: “ACF Fiorentina is pleased to announce that Alvaro Odriozola Arzallus has joined the club on loan from Real Madrid CF until 30 June 2022.

“The 26-year-old full-back, born in San Sebastian, Spain on 14 December 1995, has previously plied his trade for his home-town side Real Sociedad, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

“His honours list includes a Spanish Super Cup, a Liga title, a German Cup, a Bundesliga and a Champions League crown.

“Last season he made 16 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring two goals.

“Alvaro also has four senior Spain caps to his name.
