It’s official, Napoli finally made the decision about San Paolo Stadium everybody was expecting over the previous week in Italy and the world.

Napoli’s San Paolo Stadium is a historic place where one of the best players in football history performed at his best. Argentine storyteller Hernan Casciari has a poem where he talks about being alive in Naples during the late ‘80s.

This is the time when Diego Maradona played for Napoli and truly conquered the world as one of the best players ever. His impact was so massive that the people from the Italian city still worship Diego as a deity to this day. The passing of this football legend sent the town to a mourning state that is still very fresh in their memory.

To the overwhelming majority of the Naples citizens, San Paolo Stadium has to bear Maradona’s name but the club hadn’t made it official. Journalist Fabrizio Romano was the one who had the scoop about the decision before anybody else. Today, the club announced the decision as final in order to honor their most important player in history.

Maradona’s number ‘10’ is also untouchable.

Now that Diego has Napoli’s stadium to his name, this became the second honor the club makes for him. When he left the club at the start of the ‘90s, the club decided to officially retire Diego’s number ‘10’ jersey. In recent months, the press flirted with the idea to offer the number to James Rodriguez in order to lure him to Napoli.

However, this idea might never be considered again after Maradona’s passing last week. San Paolo Stadium was the place where Diego played some of the most impressive football anybody ever saw. A statement from the supporters keeps coming to mind right after Maradona took Napoli to win their first Scudetto in 1987.

Supporters were so enamored by Diego’s football that they always bragged about it to the people who weren’t there to witness his greatness. They keep telling the world that we “don’t know what we missed”. This is a fitting tribute to one of the most important figures in football history as a way to honor his legacy.
