“Maradona was a hero for all of us” – Ex-Napoli star thanks the legend

The Chelsea midfielder and former Napoli star expressed his sadness after Diego Maradona’s devastating death.

Former Napoli star Jorginho paid his respects to Diego Maradona for his influence on the Italian city. The Argentine legend expired on Wednesday at his home in Tigre, near Buenos Aires after sustaining a cardiac arrest. The 60-year-old spent most of November in recovery from his brain surgery on November 3. The entire world is in sorrow after his passing, and Argentina declared a three-day period of national mourning. 

Maradona served as an icon for the footballing world and is widely known as one of the greatest players of all time. The likes of Pele, Leo Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, and many others sent tribute to Diego. A man who enjoyed the limelight during his runs at Boca Juniors, Barcelona, and Napoli. Moreover, Maradona’s World Cup-winning glory in 1986 will never be wiped-off from the history books of this beautiful game.

He knows the feeling of losing the icon.

If you were unaware, the Argentine’s best performances came at Stadio San Paolo when he played for Napoli between 1984 and 1991. While winning two Serie A titles, the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup, Maradona racked 258 appearances scoring 115 goals. And Jorginho acknowledges the impact that the gifted striker made on the city of Naples. The Italy international has enjoyed four years at Napoli before joining Chelsea in 2018.

“Diego Maradona was a hero for all of us who love football. What he did on the pitch was just unbelievable,” said the Italian midfielder. “It is something that no one can ever forget because he made the history of football. I was lucky to meet him once in Naples. Took a picture with him and I will never forget that day as well. Those who met him will never forget it. Who saw what he did on the pitch will never forget.

“Today is a sad day because it is a big loss and I struggle to believe it happened at this age. What he did for the city of Naples, everyone just loves him so much for it. I felt that. I need to say thanks for what he did for football. He made us dream. Every kid who watched his skills and what he did on the pitch, every fan, everyone just loved and will love him forever for what he did on the pitch.

“I am sad today about what happened, I have and I will always have big respect for Diego Maradona. Thank you, Diego. Rest in peace.”
