The Red Devils have awarded their manager a new long-term deal following his steady progress at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has signed a new three-year contract as Manchester United manager until 2024, with the option for another 12 months included.

The Norwegian, who had a year left on his previous deal, replaced Jose Mourinho in December 2018 and has steadied the ship across the last two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

United have overseen third and second-place finishes in the last two Premier League campaigns, while also reaching the Europa League final last season.

Now the club board has awarded Solskjaer with a new deal as he aims to bring home silverware for the first time since 2017 in the upcoming campaign.

“Everyone knows the feeling I have for this club, and I am delighted to have signed this new contract,” Solskjaer told the club’s website.

“It is an exciting time for Manchester United, we have built a squad with a good balance of youth and experienced players that are hungry for success.

“I have a fantastic coaching team around me, and we are all ready to take that next step on our journey. Manchester United wants to be winning the biggest and best trophies and that’s what we are all striving for. We have improved, both on and off the pitch, and that will continue over the coming seasons.

“I can’t wait to get out in front of a packed Old Trafford and get this campaign started.”

Solskjaer’s record as manager

The former striker has recorded 85 wins, 32 draws, and 34 defeats in 151 games since taking charge in December 2018.

Solskjaer made a promising start on an interim basis by changing squad morale and results. This led to some memorable triumphs, including a Champions League comeback win over Paris Saint-Germain. Therefore, United awarded him a three-year deal in March 2019 to become Mourinho’s permanent successor.

The 48-year-old has since had his fair share of highs and lows, but he did enough to secure back-to-back top-four finishes in the Premier League and lead the club to the Europa League final last season.

The only thing missing is silverware, which Solskjaer needs to amend soon. He has come close frequently, having lost four cup semi-finals and a final on penalties, and will hope 2021/22 is the season he gets his big break.

The £73 million (€85m) arrival of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund should aid him.
