Former Newcastle captain and Argentina international Fabricio Coloccini announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39.

Former Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini, 39, has disclosed that he will no longer play professional football.

The ex-Argentina international spent eight years of his career at St James’ Park following his departure from Deportivo La Coruna in 2008.

In fact, under his captainship, the Magpies stepped into the Premier League in 2010. Coloccini racked a total of 275 appearances for Newcastle.

In 2016, he returned to his homeland to be part of San Lorenzo in Buenos Aires. However, he has now announced his retirement after featuring for another top-flight club in the same city, Aldosivi.

Coloccini wrote on Instagram: “I was immersed in a dream for 22 years of my life that has given me much more than I imagined.”

“I fulfilled all my dreams as a soccer player, (and) know that I was happy during this trip which I would have liked never to end.”

“But unfortunately it has an expiration date. Like everything.”

Newcastle honoured their legendary captain with a sugared tweet on Twitter. It read: “Congratulations on a fantastic career, Colo and all the very best with your next chapter.”
