Geoffrey Kondogbia has completed a transfer to Wanda Metropolitano on a four-year deal, ending his three-year stay at Mestalla.

Diego Simeone was left in a disturbed and helpless state following the departure of Thomas Partey on the deadline day of the summer transfer window.

Arsenal’s interest in Partey had long been known, but it was unexpected of the London-based side to match the release clause of the Ghanian and seal his signature moments before the market closed.

Atletico were left with insufficient time to compensate for their loss and hence given special permission to bring in a replacement for the all-crucial midfielder in the off-market period.

On Tuesday, Los Rojiblancos exercised their privilege and confirmed the transfer of Geoffrey Kondogbia.

A statement on the announcement on the official club website read: “Atletico de Madrid and Valencia CF have reached an agreement over the transfer of Geoffrey Kondogbia.

“A talented and strong midfielder joins Atletico de Madrid. His physical presence, defensive skills and striking ability from distance make him a versatile player in the centre of the pitch.”

The Central African Republic international has committed a long-term deal with the Spanish giants running through to 2024.

He was expected to follow in the footsteps of Dani Parejo, Ferran Torres, and Rodrigo and quit Mestalla in the previous transfer window, with a number of teams interested.

Kondogbia reportedly pushed for a departure in the last few days after he was left out of Valencia’s squad list for the match against Getafe.
