Eric Abidal has been relieved of his duties as technical director by the board at Barcelona.
Following the sacking of Quique Setien, Barcelona has also terminated the employment of Eric Abidal.
The former player was employed as the club’s technical director for the past two years. However, this year has seen the club’s troubles reach catastrophic levels, and consequently many fingers pointing at Abidal.
The writing has been on the wall for some time, especially after the very public fallout between him and club talisman Lionel Messi.
Barcelona released a statement that ultimately thanked Abidal for his service to the club. But behind the scenes, it was probably more a case of good riddance.
The club’s official website said:
“FC Barcelona and Éric Abidal have reached an agreement for the ending of the contract that united the two parties.”
“The Club would publicly like to thank Éric Abidal for his professionalism, commitment, dedication and the close and positive nature of his relationship with all aspects of the blaugrana family.”
This is no doubt another of many changes that will come about from the embarrassment that saw an end to Barcelona’s season.
Could Lionel Messi leave too?
