Just three days after their Champions League exit, Barcelona have relieved Quique Setien of his coaching duties.

Barcelona have announced the sacking of Quique Setien as manager. It was only a matter of when than if, given the recent happenings at the club.

The first of many problems for the Spanish manager was letting Real Madrid pip Barca to the La Liga title. Inconsistent performances post restart saw the Catalan giants lose a good grip to their arch-rivals.

But Setien had himself a lifeline in the Champions League. So he would think. It grew from bad to worse as Barca recorded their worst defeat in the competition against Bayern Munich. The German side showed no mercy as they ran riot to a 8-2 thumping of Barcelona.

It was the final nail in the coffin for the club. This season is also the first that Barcelona has gone without a single trophy since the 2007-08 campaign.

Just 72 hours since that shocking result, the Spanish giants have parted ways with Quique Setien.

A statement on the club’s website read:

“Quique Setien came to Barça as coach on 13 January of this year. During his seven months in charge the Cantabrian coached the first team in 25 matches: 19 in the league, three in the Champions League and three in the Copa del Rey.

“The breakdown of his results was 16 wins, four draws and five defeats.”

Club legend Ronald Koeman is the likely candidate expected to be named Barca boss.

The Dutchman was spotted at the airport today amidst reports he could be appointed Barca manager by weekend.
