Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic says his side have no room for excuses ahead of the new Premier League season.

Matic has called on his teammates to put in their best foot and challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The last time the Red Devils were domestic champions dates far back as 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson. His departure also meant the end of what was an era of dominance for the Manchester side.

Since then, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have tried but to no avail. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer currently finds himself in the hot seat.

Matic doesn’t see why United shouldn’t be challenging the likes of Liverpool and City for the title.

The Red Devils could only manage a third-place finish last season but the 32-year-old wants even better.

Matic, who recently called time on his international career says his side must not give excuses next term.

“From the next season there is no excuse. We have to go with everything,” the midfielder explained on the UTD Podcast.

“We have to fight for the title because I felt that this year we dropped some points too easy.”

“We allowed Liverpool to win [the title], I don’t know, 10 games before the season finished. They won the league, so we cannot allow that. We need to fight to the end. We have to play with more confidence, with more responsibility.”

In fact, Matic has a target of winning the Premier League in a Man United jersey.

“My personal target is to win the league with United and I am sure that everyone wants to do the same. We have to promise our supporters that we will do our best – exactly what we have done after [the coronavirus lockdown] when we started to play again. That’s Manchester United.”

Matic signed a contract extension with United last month that will keep him at the club until 2023.
