Napoli star Victor Osimhen will not be able to play for the Super Eagles in the upcoming tournament.

Victor Osimhen suffered a head injury during Napoli’s 3-2 defeat against Inter earlier this week. Following a collision with Inter’s Milan Skriniar, the Nigerian star received lengthy on-field treatment before limping off the pitch.

Initial tests showed Osimhen had suffered an orbital fracture and also broke his cheekbone. The player underwent surgery on Tuesday, with the club confirming the success of the operation.

“The player is fine and will remain under observation for a few days.” Napoli’s official statement reads.

“The prognosis is estimated to be around 90 days.”

Osimhen will miss the chance to play for Nigeria in their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations campaign. The Napoli star was planning to spearhead his nations efforts to win their fourth continental title. However, the Super Eagles must quickly find a replacement for the player as the competition will start only two months from now. This also applies to Napoli, who benefitted from Osimhen’s top form to get on top of the Serie A table.

Nigeria will face Egypt in their opening game of the competition. A battle between Mohamed Salah and Osimhen would have been nice to watch, but we will have to wait longer to see that.
