The Magpies have signed the Brazil international from Lyon as part of their extensive recruitment plans.

Newcastle completed the signing of Bruno Guimaraes on a £33 million deal from Lyon on Sunday. The Brazil international becomes the club’s third January signing, joining a fortified Magpies backline.

Guimaraes is the flagship of Newcastle’s January recruitments as he becomes their second-most expensive signing ever. In an interview after the unveiling of the 24-year-old, Magpies manager Eddie Howe spoke about the transfer.

“Bruno is a hugely exciting talent and has been one of our primary targets so I’m delighted to secure him.” How told the club’s website.

He strengthens the group immediately ready for the challenge ahead.

“He has been one of the standout performers in France and is a full international for Brazil so I have no doubt our supporters will really enjoy watching him. We look forward to welcoming him to the club on his return from international duty.”

Following an impressive spell at Brazilian club Athletico Paranaense, Guimaraes joined Lyon in 2020. The defender then quickly developed himself as a key player at the Groupama Stadium, attracting interest from several top clubs. He will join Newcastle’s squad as soon as he returns from his international duty with Brazil.

The arrival of Guimares comes after the signings of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood. Newcastle’s recent takeover has provided more transfer funds for the clubs while they hope to avoid relegation in their current campaign. Despite their three new arrivals, the Magpies will most likely remain active in the current transfer window.
