Kylian Mbappe shouldn’t be considered for a Ballon d’Or award until he has broken his Champions League duck, says Jose Mourinho.
Few would argue against the notion that Mbappe is a future Ballon d’Or winner following a remarkable start to his career, which has already seen him reach the pinnacle of football.
The 21-year-old striker is the full package in his explosive pace, quick feet, dribbling, and goalscoring abilities. He is what defenses dread, with 30 goals and 19 assists in 36 games to his name this season.
His exploits have led many to tip him to become the successor to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the future.
10 major honors have also come Mbappe’s way across his young career, including a World Cup and four successive Ligue 1 titles. European success is the only thing missing from his cabinet. Although he’ll have a chance to fix that in Sunday’s final between PSG and Bayern Munich.
Until then, however, Mourinho believes a maiden Ballon d’Or will have to wait.
“I think that you should never win the Ballon d’Or if your team is not successful as a team,” Mourinho told DAZN.
“So for me if I was the guy to choose the Ballon d’Or then I would only give the Ballon d’Or to players with achievements as a team, which for me means that if Mbappe doesn’t win the Champions League then he shouldn’t be considered.”
“But that is just the feeling of somebody that is a team man, a team coach, and the team is always more important.
“Honestly, I look to Mbappe and I see a team player, I don’t think he’s thinking about Ballon d’Or, he’s just thinking about adding the Champions League to an already incredible CV that the kid has.”
Mourinho also took aim at Mbappe’s club PSG for not winning a Champions League title before now.
