Jose Mourinho refused to blame Serge Aurier for his role in Tottenham’s disappointing defeat to Leicester at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Tottenham Hotspur looked to be going into half-time at 0-0 with Leicester City earlier this afternoon. A costly mistake from Aurier changed the turn of the game.
Leicester started quicker than Spurs and maintained it throughout the majority of the first 45 minutes. However, the Lilywhites were enjoying their best period leading up to the whistle.
Unfortunately for Jose Mourinho, Serge Aurier gave away a mindless penalty with just seconds left on the clock, bringing down Fofana on the edge of the box.
The Leicester defender had his back to goal and posed no danger to Spurs when Aurier decided to clatter into the back of him for no apparent reason.
Jamie Vardy stepped up to take the penalty and scored. It got worse for Spurs in the second half when an own-goal from Alderweireld put Leicester 2-0 up. Tottenham chased the game to no avail but ended up with a defeat on home turf.
Mourinho reacted to the penalty in his post-match press conference but refused to blame Aurier for any of it or for his side’s loss in general.
He said to Sky Sports: “The penalty is not a penalty created it is a penalty that we commit. It is not something that was created or comes in the sequence of something great. For me comes isolated of the context of the time.”
“Is it a problem? Let’s focus on today. It was a mistake but it was a mistake in minute 45 or 46. Then we had players making mistakes in other areas. I can’t blame a player for making a mistake.”
With the result, Spurs could find themselves in fifth place in the league after failing to win in their last three games.
