The Portuguese head coach appears to have taken a swipe, and not for the first time, about the penalty record of his former employers.
Jose Mourinho aimed a cheeky dig at Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes while praising Son Heung-min for his 100th goal for Tottenham.
Fernandes is in his first full season at Old Trafford and he remains as impactful as he was in the last one after joining the club from Sporting in January 2020.
With 11 goals in 16 league games this season, the midfielder is the leading goalscorer for his side and sits third in the Premier League scoring charts.
Five of those goals have come from the penalty spot, including his latest strike, the winner in Friday’s 2-1 result against Aston Villa.
Son is one of the only two players with more goals than the 26-year-old Portuguese in this campaign. The South Korean scored his 12th league goal as well as his 100th for Tottenham in the 3-0 win over Leeds United.
Tottenham were awarded a penalty of their own in Saturday’s result, with Harry Kane converting it, but Mourinho couldn’t resist firing shots at Fernandes over his penalty record.
“I’m very happy for him, I’m very happy that now people realize the player he is,” the Spurs boss told about Son, via MEN. “I think we all have to explain to people the person he is, too.
“To get the Puskas award, to be scoring 100 goals for Tottenham, and to be maybe in the top three Premier League scorers without penalties.
“Some players score 10 goals a season on penalties and I’m not speaking about Harry Kane, by the way.”
