Jose Mourinho has aimed a jibe at former employers Chelsea, who have spent €223 on six new players in the current transfer market.

Chelsea have made a splash in the 2020 summer transfer window. In a period where clubs are taking on loans to guarantee their continuity, the Blues have added to their ranks in a reckless fashion.

Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner are their marquee signings. All the while, Hakim Ziyech, Malanga Sarr and Thiago Silva are also known quantities. Eduard Mendy is also touted to arrive at the Stamford Bridge.

The big-name arrivals has caught everyone by surprise. Especially after the Blues failed to add a single player in the previous two windows.

The expenditure is even more striking given the shrewd approach of clubs across the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool has only seen a single arrival. It is the same story at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Tottenham cannot make headway in their hunt for a striker. Jose Mourinho has echoed Klopp’s sentiments and aimed a sly dig at Chelsea.

The Portuguese called into question the cash influx provided by Roman Abramovich. In his opinion, such sums are reserved for countries and not football clubs.

“The other day Jurgen [Klopp] was saying that Liverpool is not a club of oligarchs and that belongs to countries,” Mourinho told Evening Standard. “We are the same. We cannot go to the market and spend a fortune on players.

“But we all – we all, I want to make that clear – are working hard to give a good balance to the squad and that good balance would to get one more striker to the team.”

Tottenham welcome Everton to North London for their season opener. Spurs have only faced one defeat at the start of their last seven Premier League campaigns.
