The 26-year-old was brought in by the Rossoneri as a successor to Donnarumma, who switched to rivals Inter.

Mike Maignan has revealed he rejected an approach by AS Roma as he was “ready for this new adventure” at AC Milan.

Maignan’s stock soared after he helped former club Lille to dethrone Paris Saint-Germain as the champions of Ligue 1 last season.

The goalkeeper was being by a number of clubs this summer and ended up signing for Milan, who paid a reported €15 million to secure his services.

Gianluigi Donnarumma had been the first-choice shot-stopper for the Rossoneri in the past few years but now that responsibility will go to the 26-year-old Frenchman, who was voted as the UNFP Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year in 2018–19.

“It was an honour to receive the call from Maldini and Massara towards the end of a great season for me. Really emotional,” Maignan told a press conference.

“I stayed focussed on finishing the season strongly with Lille, but I told them straight away that I was ready for this new adventure.

“We discussed terms, awaiting also developments on the Donnarumma situation, then ultimately I signed.

“I was also contacted by Roma, but chose the Rossoneri.”
