Ahead of the Spanish Supercup final on Sunday, Ronald Koeman revealed that Lionel Messi himself will make the final decision to play or not.
There are still many doubts about Lionel Messi playing the Spanish Supercup final or not this Sunday. The Argentine star is carrying muscular problems that prevented him from playing the semifinal against Real Sociedad. However, he was included in the Catalan club’s trip to Sevilla for the final at Olympic Stadium in the city.
Before today’s practice, Koeman revealed that Messi himself was going to make the final decision to play or not. During the training session, we could see the captain making sprints with no problems alongside the rest of his teammates. This is a great sign for tomorrow’s final against Athletic Club Bilbao. But make no mistake, Leo will remain in doubt until the last minute. There is even a possibility he will start the game on the bench and get on the pitch during the second half.
Koeman is confident Leo will recover in time.
In today’s press conference reported by Sport, Ronald Koeman gave his assessment on the upcoming match and also the state of Messi’s health. Even though there is a chance he won’t be able to start, Koeman still leaves this decision in his hands. What everybody is avoiding right now, is obviously a more serious injury that keeps Messi out for longer.
“Leo trained individually yesterday. At first, today’s practice at 18:00 will include him and then we will see what happens. The player is the one who has the last word always because he knows his own body. We will wait until tomorrow because he will let us know how his body responds. Let’s wait and see how he feels after today’s practice. There’s hope he can be a part of the game tomorrow.”
