In wake of his seventh Ballon d’Or title, Lionel Messi revealed how he feels about being potentially the greatest player of all time.

Lionel Messi says he has never sought to be the best, insisting that simply being considered among the greatest players is ‘more than enough’ for him.

The 2021 Ballon d’Or winner did an interview with France Football to discuss his latest triumph and several other subjects, including life at Paris Saint-Germain and how he prefers to play.

One of the topics mentioned was how Messi ranks himself amongst the best after winning a seventh Ballon d’Or – especially as many fans, pundits, and even his fellow footballers rate him as the greatest of all time or ‘GOAT’.

What did he say?

“I’ve never said it, thought it, or even tried to get used to the idea of it,” said Messi.

“For me, the fact alone that I can be considered among the best in the world is more than enough. It’s something that I never would have dared to imagine or dream of.

He added: “But… [pauses] I don’t know how to say this without being misinterpreted… It’s not that it doesn’t interest me, but let’s say that I don’t attach a lot of importance to all of that. Being the best or not changes nothing to me. Nor have I ever looked to be the best.”
