The 2021 Ballon d’Or winner humbly paid tribute to the man he narrowly edged for this year’s award in his acceptance speech.

Lionel Messi has praised Robert Lewandowski for improving each year and proving to the world what a ‘great striker’ he is.

The Paris Saint-Germain star has also urged France Football to award Lewandowski the 2020 Ballon d’Or, which he believes the Bayern Munich star would’ve won had the French outlet not canceled the award that year.

Messi paid tribute to the Pole during his acceptance speech in Paris after edging his rival by a mere 33 points to win the prestigious award for the seventh time in his career on Monday.

“I would like to mention Robert Lewandowski, it’s been a real honor to compete with you,” said Messi.

“Everyone knows, and we agree that you were the winner last year. I think France Football should award you your 2020 Ballon d’Or – you deserve it and you should have it at home.”

He added: “I think Robert Lewandowski had a great year. Year after year, he improves and shows the excellent striker he is, as well as his ability to score goals.

“This year he was awarded as the top scorer. Of course he can certainly aspire to that level next year, thanks to his way of being on the pitch. And in addition, he plays for a big club.”

Lewandowski didn’t leave Paris empty-handed, though, as he won Striker of the Year for his efforts in 2021.
