While PSG claimed vital victory over Real Madrid, Lionel Messi matched the record for most missed penalties in Champions League.

Lionel Messi has matched Thierry Henry’s record for missing the most amount of penalties in Champions League history. The Argentine has also exceeded on-field rival Cristiano Ronaldo for most penalty attempts in the competition.

Messi failed to score five out of his 23 efforts from the spot in the tournament. The South-American icon managed to miss his latest in Paris Saint-Germain’s win over Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois correctly judged Messi’s shot as he dived the right way to defend his goal. Kylian Mbappe, however, concluded the affair with his brilliant goal late in the match.

PSG had minimal chances on Madrid’s goalpost apart from Messi’s saved penalty. Courtois told BT Sport after the clash: “In these kinds of games you know that, as a goalkeeper, you’re going to have quite a bit to do.”

In fact, Courtois also claimed that saving the attempt from the mercurial Messi was an output of rigorous study and experience.

“I’d studied Messi’s penalties a lot and I tried to play with him when I was on the line. You’ve also got to have that little bit of luck, too.”
