The Senegal international remains hopeful of ending the year on a high note.

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is confident he has done enough in 2021 to win the Yashin Trophy.

The 29-year-old, who wasn’t nominated for the Ballon d’Or, is on the 10-man shortlist of nominees for the France Football award that recognizes the best goalkeeper of a calendar year.

A selection of former Ballon d’Or winners will determine who wins the accolade named after Lev Yashin, the only keeper to have ever won the Ballon d’Or.

“Of course I think I can win it,” Mendy, who recorded 23 clean sheets in 43 Premier League games and helped Chelsea win the Champions League, told BBC Sport Africa.

“[If I do win it] I think it would be something I would have deserved. It’s something I have worked hard to get, so it would be a great pride given my journey.

“A few years ago, I was unemployed, without a club and today I find myself named among the best goalkeepers in the world.

“It’s something really positive. It shows me that I’m on the right path and in a good place to win titles and be the best in the world.”

France Football will announce which goalkeeper has won the 2021 Yashin Trophy, alongside the Ballon d’Or winner, in a gala in Paris on Monday night.
