The Senegal international didn’t make the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist despite a brilliant title-winning start to life at Chelsea.

Edouard Mendy has confessed he wonders whether he would’ve been included in the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist if he played for the French national team.

Despite his starring role in Chelsea’s Champions League success last season, France Football didn’t nominate Mendy for the Ballon d’Or. In fact, Gianluigi Donnarumma was the only goalkeeper on the 30-man shortlist.

The French outlet’s decision left the 29-year-old’s Senegal teammates Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly unimpressed. Even Blues teammate Antonio Rudiger was left stunned, especially after the goalkeeper gave fans a reminder of his quality with a recent match-winning performance against Brentford.

“It’s something that motivates me and pushes me to work. Honestly, I am wondering,” Mendy told Canal Plus.

“If I had played for France and had taken part in the Euro, would we have this debate and this reflection?”

Regardless, Mendy has continued from where he left off last season by impressing in the Chelsea goal.

The French-born Senegalese has kept nine clean sheets in 15 appearances across all competitions and conceded just six goals.
