As the Belgium vs England match approaches, Roberto Martinez revealed why he thinks Wayne Rooney’s goal-record is in real danger.
Roberto Martinez knows English football quite well after spending many years at Everton, which is Wayne Rooney’s alma mater. The Derby County player is still active but he already left a giant legacy behind him that will be hard to match.
After spending the better part of his career at Manchester United, he ended as the all-time top scorer. But his achievements don’t stop there. Wayne didn’t only surpass Sir Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United record, he also did it at the England National Team.
As things stand right now, Rooney is still the all-time top scorer with 53 goals. However, we are living in a new era where many great players are becoming their country’s top scorers. There are countless major names in football we can mention right now, but we need to focus on England.
It’s no secret that Harry Kane is currently threatening Rooney’s place as the main man. He is only 21 goals shy of Rooney’s record and he is still 27 years old. Roberto Martinez believes Kane can surpass Wayne by the time he finishes his international career.
Martinez expects a tough game against England.
With Belgium about to face England in the UEFA Nations League, Martinez recalled the painful defeat at Wembley.
“I feel it was a balanced game,” said Martinez via AS. “We lost control during the second half. Everybody was happy with the first half and we have another chance to extend those 45 minutes to 90 tomorrow. We have a chance to control both areas.
“It hurt us because it was a balanced game and very different between both halves. We know what happened and it’s a great chance to complete three good victories while at home. The game at Wembley is still fresh. I hope a very balanced game.
“I have no idea what playing 50 games is like for a player, but I can tell you that Harry Kane has grown and improved to become one of the best strikers in the world. He is a modern centre-forward: he can assist and score goals. A very complete player. His is a beautiful story about how he’s evolved to become an iconic player for Tottenham and England.
“I am nobody to give my opinion, the perfect man for that is Southgate. But Harry’s development has been incredible and he has the potential to surpass Rooney’s record. He is in a great position to do so.”
