Marcotti: ‘Alcantra signing too good a deal to pass up’

Liverpool have been linked with Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara but it seems Manchester United have also joined the race for his signature.

Liverpool stalled on paying up for Timo Werner and Chelsea swooped in to get the German attacker. The Reds are poised in making the same mistake again with Thiago Alcantara.

A cut-price deal should have been agreed a long time ago but the Anfield based entity are sluggish in their approach. It seems they will have to pay for their lethargy.

Manchester United have entered the foray and are ready to usurp his Merseyside adventures. The Red Devils will pay £23 million for his signature and add him to their ranks alongside Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

European football expert Gabriele Marcotti agrees United’s approach and believes its the right move. There are not many midfielders of his caliber and not making a move for him will be silly on the record English champions’ part.

“I think the difficulty from Bayern’s perspective is generating interest because already he’s been linked to Liverpool quite strongly and you want to create an auction, you want to move Liverpool along so that Liverpool don’t come in with a cut-rate price or maybe somebody leapfrogs ahead of them,” the Express quoted Marcotti.

“I think that’s what they’re trying to do with Manchester United here, hence the link.

“For me personally, while you can never have too many creative players, I kind of think that if you’re going to have [Paul] Pogba and Van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes, even just playing two of those three, you probably want a strong, anchor midfielder who can do the grunt defensive work and that’s not Thiago Alcantara.

“But it might be a price at which United say: ‘Hey, this is too good a deal to pass up’.”

Liverpool have started the season in abysmal fashion. They lost to Arsenal in the Community Shield, despite playing majority of their first team.
