The Los Blancos armband has been transferred from one long-serving stalwart to another after six seasons.
Marcelo is honored to become the captain of “the greatest club in the world” Real Madrid.
Sergio Ramos, one of Real Madrid’s best captains ever and also one of the most influential players in their history, recently joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer after 16 years of service to the club.
The captaincy duty at Santiago Bernabeu is allotted by a player’s seniority, with Marcelo naturally being in line to inherit the armband.
Just like the previous skipper, Marcelo, who has taken in 528 appearances at the club while winning five La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies, is also a celebrated name in Los Blancos’ recent history.
“It’s an honor and an enormous responsibility to be captain of the greatest club in the world,” the Brazilian full-back told the club’s official website. “I’m extremely lucky.
“When you are a Real Madrid player you wake up every day full of desire and that grows after every season. I’ve been here for a long time, but the desire is still there and it just keeps on growing. I’m really looking forward to the start of the new season.
“I learn a lot every season, there’s always something new. I’m even more excited about this campaign because I’m Real Madrid captain. It’s a dream come true for me and I believe I’ve done everything I can to be here for such a long time.”
