The Bayern goalkeeper has stayed out of action since breaking his leg in a ski accident back in December.
Manuel Neuer has reportedly suffered a major setback in his recovery process, forcing Bayern Munich to intensify their search for a new goalkeeper.
The injury occurred in December following Germany’s exit from the World Cup in Qatar. Neuer broke his right leg while skiing, missing the rest of the 2023-24 campaign.
According to Sky Sports Germany, Neuer’s leg recovery has hit a roadblock, dashing hopes of his return to team training in the pre-season.
The extent of the setback is yet to be determined, and medical scans will be conducted to assess the timeline of his comeback. This news comes as a blow for Bayern, who were counting on Neuer’s return to bolster their goalkeeping options.
Bayern Munich have been searching for a long-term successor for the veteran goalkeeper in recent weeks. Fabrizio Romano has claimed the club are eyeing Giorgi Mamardashvili, the Valencia goalkeeper from La Liga, as a potential addition to their squad.
While the Bavarians have already signed Yann Sommer as a mid-season replacement for Neuer, they still lack a promising young talent to succeed the German shot-stopper in the long run.
In addition, Alexander Nubel, who returns from a two-year loan at Monaco, and Sven Ulreich are also part of Bayern’s goalkeeping contingent.
Nubel’s agent has already indicated that his client is seeking a move away from the club. However, the latest development regarding Neuer’s injury could persuade the 26-year-old to fight for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s lineup.
