The former Real Madrid star has lost his place in United’s lineup in recent weeks.
Raphael Varane is reportedly among Barcelona’s transfer targets for a possible mid-season move.
An untimely injury at the beginning of the season saw Varane lose his place in United’s starting XI. In his absence, Harry Maguire regained his place in Erik ten Hag’s plans, limiting Varane’s minutes upon his return to the pitch.
The Frenchman, who has made only seven starts for the Red Devils in the Premier League, could even have less playing time when Lisandro Martinez returns from injury later this month.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Varane’s situation has caught the attention of Barcelona, who are eager to add a new defender to their ranks. The Spanish outlet has claimed the Catalans can secure Varane’s services for around €20 million.
Barcelona struggled with personnel issues in their backline earlier this season, with the likes of Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo picking up injuries. However, with both players gaining full fitness in recent days, the Catalans are in no urgent need for a new centre-back.
The situation could change, however, if Barcelona decides to sell Araujo amid interest from Bayern Munich. The Uruguayan star is reportedly Thomas Tuchel’s No.1 target to “lead” Bayern’s backline, with the German champions pushing to improve their defensive depth before the second half of the campaign.
