Alisson had a day to forget while Gundogan redeemed himself for a penalty miss as the Sky Blues walked over the Reds at Anfield.
Manchester City took a massive step towards clinching the Premier League title with a 4-1 victory against Liverpool.
All five goals came in the second half, although the deadlock had been broken in the first half had Ilkay Gundogan not missed the spot-kick awarded due to a clumsy tackle on Raheem Sterling by Fabinho.
But the Turkish international made sure to right his wrong. Five minutes after the break, Gundogan prodded high into the net on the rebound following’s Alisson save on Sterling’s shot.
Another penalty was awarded, this time to Liverpool. Surprisingly, it was Ruben Dias who was at fault as he brought down Sterling with a slight tug on his sleeve. Mohamed Salah made no mistake and handed his side a lifeline.
Just ten minutes later, Gundogan doubled City’s lead after a howler from Alisson. The Brazilian goalkeeper hooked a clearance straight to Phil Foden who slipped away from a couple of players to find Gundogan, who swept the ball into the back of the net from close range.
Allison produced another horrible clearance and was punished by the opponents, with Sterling heading the ball in. Foden, who had been brilliant on the night, then also got on the scoresheet to seal the win with an absolutely spectacular strike.
The Sky Blues lost out the trophy to their most recent opponents last time out – and in an embarrassing fashion at that – but now are in pole position to claim it.
