Yet to get win the league in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, the Red Devils have not tasted title success since 2013.

Manchester United are “finally ready to go and challenge” for the Premier League title with Cristiano Ronaldo back in the team, says Wayne Rooney.

Ronaldo led Manchester United to Premier League triumph before leaving for Real Madrid on a then world-record transfer. In fact, 2008-09 was a third successive season in which he had led the team to an English top-flight crown.

In his vastly successful first spell at Old Trafford, the Portuguese forward had also guided the club to FA Cup, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Community Shield, and multiple Football League Cup successes.

CR7 is now back at United for a second spell, and one of his ex-colleagues is backing him to help the club to another title glory.

Rooney told talkSPORT: “What impact will Ronaldo have? An enormous one, I think he’s still one of the best players in the world.

“I think we’ve seen in the game against Ireland that’s what he does, last couple of minutes he scores two goals, two great headers, so he can have a massive impact on this league.”

“I think United are finally ready to go and challenge for the title, and I really feel they have to this year,” Rooney added.

“[Ronaldo’s] going to be a big player, I think he’ll have very big moments in the season and I’m sure he’ll score a lot of goals.”
